The Tasca

If you want to experience a very Portuguese kind of meal, keep an eye out for a little word:

Tasca.

A tasca is a traditional, usually informal Portuguese eatery. The sort of place where the food is unfussy, the atmosphere is lively and you might find yourself sitting alongside locals enjoying a long lunch or dinner.

Don't expect elaborate menus or overly polished interiors.

That's part of the charm.

White plastic table cloths.

A handful of tables.

A handwritten menu.

A few daily specials.

Someone calling out from the kitchen. And food that feels like it belongs there.

You might find grilled fish, meats, stews, petiscos, potatoes, salads, bread, cheese, olives and whatever happens to be particularly good that day.

And this is one of the best things about eating in Portugal:

You don't always need to know exactly what you're looking for.

Sometimes you simply ask:

“O que recomenda?”

What do you recommend?

Then trust the answer.

A tasca is less about the perfect dining experience and more about being part of everyday Portuguese life.

So if you spot a small, busy place with locals inside, don't be afraid to take a look.

It might just become your favourite meal of the trip.
